Vishal Bali
on his Journey to commemorate the lesser-known legacies of the Indigenous Tribes of India
Imagine being so connected to your roots that you dedicate your life to the preservation of the culture and tradition that you experience in your daily life. Such is the life of Vishal Bali, a candid traveller and a master storyteller, who likes to collect stories wherever he goes. As a boon of his roots, he has encountered countless inspiring stories from the indigenous tribes of India. Unfortunately, increasingly urban and capitalist world has very little knowledge of these tribes, let alone their stories. A sudden realisation that some of these tribes might be living their last generations, at the brinks of complete extinction, laid the foundations of Vishal’s first initiative ‘Roots of Indigene’.
Under the hoods of Roots of Indigene, Vishal hosts travellers and photographers from all over the world, helping them to understand and document the tribal culture and communities of India, with hopes to make these stories eternal and everlasting. He has been working closely with the tribes of India intending to contribute to their lives and leave a positive impact by helping them contain their traditional knowledge.
He couldn’t help but capture his incredible explorations within the tribal regions of India. “I didn’t choose photography, photography chose me,” says Vishal, reflecting on his Instagram feed that commemorates his unforgettable explorations over his travel projects spanning past 10 years.
It’s said ‘a tree’s beauty lies in its branches but its strength lies in its roots.’ It won’t be wrong to say that the same maximfits our society as well. Our modern technology and infrastructure might be the face of the world today, but its real strength still lies in the roots: tribal culture, age-old traditions and indelible art carried forward as generational wealth.
Travelling through the remote villages and rural areas of India, Vishal and his team has, till date, successfully documented 22 tribes and extended their helping hands towards these communities vowing to immortalise their footprints into the books of public acknowledgement and commemoration.
His zeal and determination continues with the vision to take his initiatives global, meeting more like-minded people who wish to explore the unexplored and understand the lesser-known legacies of these tribes and small communities that live a rather shadowed life in the remote areas of India.
