Legends of North-east
Nestled in the remote, mist-shrouded hills of northeastern India, the Konyak tribe is one of the most captivating and culturally rich indigenous communities of Nagaland. Known historically for their fierce warrior spirit and intricate traditions, the Konyaks are among the largest tribes in Nagaland and are widely recognized for their once-practiced headhunting rituals, their elaborate facial tattoos, and vibrant festivals that continue to preserve a legacy rooted in strength, spirituality, and connection with nature.

Konyak Tribe!
The Konyaks were once feared headhunters, a practice deeply woven into their beliefs and cultural identity. Victories in battle were symbolized by taking the heads of enemies, which were believed to carry the soul and power of the defeated. These heads were often displayed in communal houses or ‘morungs,’ and served as a rite of passage for young warriors.
What makes the Konyaks visually distinct are the tattoos that adorn their faces, chests, and arms. These were earned, not chosen — each mark tells a story of valor, conquest, or tribal responsibility. Today, these tattoos are preserved on the elderly, as younger generations have moved away from the practice after the ban on headhunting in the 1960s.
